In a recent survey conducted by El Nuevo Dia, public safety was ranked as the most worrisome issue facing the island. The economy, specifically unemployment, came in second. It was also revealed that nearly all of those surveyed have little or no trust in government institutions. The situation has become so dire that an increasing number of people are turning towards the church for a solution. Most believe the island is undergoing a social crisis, where morals and values have gone out the window. As 85% of Puerto Ricans profess to be Catholics, having the church intervene on societal issues is nothing anomalous. On numerous occasions, such as the student strike at the University of Puerto Rico as well as some labor strikes, the church has been called to intervene and serve as a mediator.
Puerto Rico has one of the highest concentration of churches per square mile in the world. Religion has exerted a huge influence in the island's culture and society, calling into question the existence the separation of church and state. The exact number of those who are actively practicing (i.e those who regularly attend church services) their religion is unknown. However, just from my observations, the majority of those who do go to church belong to a graying population. This phenomenon is also witnessed on the mainland U.S, where there is a notable decrease of church attendance amongst the younger generation. While listening to a brilliant debate on National Public Radio over the question, "Would the World Be a Better Place Without Religion?" I couldn't help but ponder over many of the excellent points which both sides were making.
A descendant of Charles Darwin was arguing in favor of this motion. In his closing statement, he argued that most societies with a highly religious population experience the most violence and have a high level of teenage pregnancies. He used the U.S as an example during the debate, but he could have easily used Puerto Rico as an example as well. On the other hand, a rabbi from the opposing

From what I "hear" of religion on the island it is probably one of the reasons for all the murders. The churches are the rudist of all teaching people that it is ok to blast out your personal views to everyone around early in the morning and late at night on a microphone with no regard for anyone. Parking cars all over, throwing garbage, yelling out with no regard for other people or neighbors. People have stolen microphones and drum sets just to try to have some peace and they don't get it. Yes - the world would be better without ORGANIZED religion. Do it your own way for yourself without disrupting others.
As a racial minority, I was treated extremely poorly while in Puerto Rico working for several years.
Workplace bullying was rife, especially against mainlanders of color.
This article thus, gives me hope that there is indeed justice in the world. The people that exacted misery and rudeness to me are reaping what they have sown.
No one deserves to suffer things to which they do not contribute. However, such is not the case with the socioeconomic implosion of Puerto Rico.
In my personal opinion, religion is the root of all evil. It is going to take a miracle for the recent violent crime rates go down.
Kofla @ God of War Diaries
I agree with Kofla, and even though the Constitution forbids it, every citizen knows Puerto Rico is a theocracy..
@ Anonymous Dec 4, They didn't treat you badly because of your skin color, if anything they treated you wrong because you were from the states. Look around PR everyone is a "person of color" the whites are the minority here.
@ Anonymous Dec. 1 Aye, you made my head hurt. So in that jarbled para. you wrote your blaming old people gathering in homes for for the high murder rate. Im sure that drugs didn't have anything to do with it....hell if your blaming noise pollution you should start with the cacos and reggaeton not too mention the blaring of horns for any and every reason.
@ Kafla, Nobody is going on crusades anymore.
Dan Wesson when you are talking about people of color are you talking about black people. As far as i know PR demographics black people are between 15 to 25 percent, also when you mention about whites as minorities, are whites or light skin puertoricans included and finally isnt PR par of your STATES your message till incomplete in my book
